Sleeping Night Care Balances Support and Cost-Effectiveness

What Sleeping Night Care Involves

Sleeping night care is similar to waking night care — a trained carer remains in your parent’s home throughout the night — but with the understanding that the carer may rest or sleep if your parent is settled and unlikely to need active assistance. This is appropriate for some parents — those with good sleep patterns, those without frequent night-time toileting, or those whose primary need is rapid response to emergencies rather than constant active support. The carer is available to respond to needs, to help with toileting, to assist with mobility, or to call emergency services if needed. But the carer is not required to remain awake and engaged throughout the entire night. Many families prefer this model because it is more cost-effective while still providing the security of professional on-site overnight support.

Understanding Your Parent’s Overnight Needs

The difference between waking and sleeping night care depends on your parent’s specific needs. Does your parent get up five times a night to use the toilet and need help each time? That requires waking care. Does your parent sleep relatively well but panic if they need help and no one is available? That might suit sleeping care. Does your parent have health conditions that could deteriorate quickly at night — heart problems, respiratory issues, confusion — requiring constant monitoring? That requires waking care. Our care coordinator Stef Clark RMN, with 30+ years in care assessment, works with your family to understand your parent’s actual overnight patterns and needs. We can arrange a trial period of sleeping care and adjust to waking care if your parent’s needs change. Our OpenPass system tracks overnight activity so you have accurate data on what your parent actually needs.
