What Waking Night Care Involves
Waking night care means a trained carer stays in your parent’s home throughout the night, remaining awake and available. They assist if your parent needs to get up for the toilet, help if your parent falls, provide care for any medical needs that arise, and monitor your parent’s wellbeing throughout the night. This is active care — the carer is present and engaged, not sleeping or ignoring your parent. Many older adults feel unsafe or anxious at night, particularly those living alone or with health conditions that cause sleep disruption or pain. Knowing a trained professional is present transforms their sense of security. We also provide peace of mind to adult children — no more worrying about whether your parent has fallen and is lying on the floor, or whether a medication has been taken.
Managing Night-Time Needs and Health Changes
Night-time can be high-risk for older adults. Falls often happen at night when getting up to use the toilet. Heart attacks or strokes can occur. Confusion or disorientation at night is common. Chronic pain, breathing difficulties, or other health conditions can worsen. A carer present throughout the night catches all of this. They help prevent falls through safe mobility support. They recognise health emergencies and call 999 if needed. They manage pain or discomfort. They provide reassurance if your parent is anxious or confused. Our OpenPass system logs everything that happens during each night — if your parent was restless, if they needed extra toileting, if they seemed anxious or in pain — so our care coordinator Stef Clark RMN reviews the overnight picture and your family is kept fully informed.
