Stroke Support Enables Recovery and Adaptation

What Stroke Support Involves

Stroke recovery varies tremendously depending on which part of the brain was affected, the size of the stroke, and the speed of medical intervention. Our carers are trained specifically in stroke support and understand the potential impacts — weakness on one side of the body, speech difficulties, balance problems, cognitive changes, or emotional changes including post-stroke depression. We support your parent’s recovery by encouraging safe movement and activity, coaching your parent to use any regained capability, and adapting the environment to enable independence. For parents with speech difficulties, we use clear, simple communication and provide time for your parent to express themselves. For parents with weakness, we support mobility while encouraging them to use affected limbs to prevent further loss of function.

Supporting Recovery While Managing Limitations

The first weeks and months after stroke are critical for recovery. Our reablement approach encourages your parent to attempt activities rather than taking over. We support safe walking practice, helping your parent build strength and confidence. We coach your parent to use weakened arms or legs, preventing the permanent loss of function that comes from disuse. For parents with speech difficulties, we communicate patiently, allowing time for your parent to find words. We also watch for post-stroke depression or emotional difficulties, reporting changes to your GP. We coordinate with physiotherapists and speech therapists if your parent is receiving rehabilitation services. Our care coordinator Stef Clark RMN, with 30+ years in care management, monitors your parent’s progress toward recovery goals and adjusts our support accordingly. Every aspect is logged in OpenPass, creating detailed records of your parent’s recovery trajectory.
