Physical Disability Care Maintains Quality of Life and Prevents Complications
What Physical Disability Support Includes
Physical disability care means comprehensive support adapted to your parent’s specific disabilities. This might be paralysis following stroke, severe arthritis limiting movement, cerebral palsy, spinal injury, or advanced Parkinson’s disease. Our carers provide support with mobility — helping your parent move safely, using equipment like hoists or walking aids, transferring from bed to chair, and enabling your parent to move around their home. We also support personal care in ways adapted to your parent’s specific limitations. Someone with use of only one arm needs different assistance than someone who is paralysed from the neck down. Our support is tailored to your parent’s specific capabilities and disabilities. We aim to support your parent to do what they can independently, coaching them and providing equipment or physical support only where genuinely necessary.
Preventing Complications and Maintaining Health
Physical disabilities increase risk of complications — pressure sores, contractures (permanent muscle shortening), chest infections, or urinary tract infections. Preventing these requires knowledge, attentiveness, and consistent support. We reposition your parent regularly to prevent pressure sores. We encourage movement and exercise within your parent’s capability to maintain mobility and prevent contractures. We ensure your parent takes medications correctly and eats and drinks adequately to maintain health. We monitor skin, breathing, and output closely, flagging any changes to your GP. Our care coordinator Stef Clark RMN, with 30+ years in complex care, works with occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and GPs to develop comprehensive care plans addressing your parent’s specific needs. Every aspect of support is logged in OpenPass, creating detailed records that guide ongoing care.
